Workplace Violence Reporting and Info Sessions
Please see the following information, that has been shared with all administrators in the Board. If you are in need of completing First Aid reports, Workplace Violence reports, or Safe Schools reports, and are directed to do them after work, please remind your admin that you are within your rights to complete them immediately.
First Aid Reports:
- Injured staff should be directed to receive first aid immediately from the school’s trained first aider. In situations, where health care is required, please ensure transportation and/or an ambulance is arranged as necessary.
- Please review all first aid reports in a timely manner. Where a corrective action has been identified, please action it as soon as possible and communicate to all workers affected. This may mean sending a communication to the entire school staff. Health Care and Lost Time Injuries:
- If you seek Health Care or Lost Time due to a workplace injury, it is imperative that you complete a WSIB form 6 as soon as possible. Workers are required to notify their supervisor when they have sought Health Care or Lost Time from work due to a workplace injury.
- All incidents involving the use of physical force (exercised, attempted, or threatened) against a worker while at work must have a workplace violence form completed by a worker. Supervisors will receive an email notification once a report has been submitted. Please note that there are no mitigating factors when reporting workplace violence incidents, thus someone’s medical condition or diagnosis does not impact the worker’s obligation/right to report and the Supervisor’s obligation to investigate and respond. The definition of workplace violence, from the Occupational Health and Safety Act, is below.
The definition of workplace violence is:
- The exercise of physical force by a person against a worker, in a workplace, that causes or could cause physical injury to the worker,
- An attempt to exercise physical force against a worker, in a workplace, that could cause physical injury to the worker,
- A statement or behavior that it is reasonable for a worker to interpret as a threat to exercise physical force against the worker, in a workplace, that could cause physical injury to the worker. Safe Schools Reporting
- All board employees are bound by the Safe Schools Act and are required to report all incidents meeting the criteria established below. Principals are required to investigate these reports and take corrective actions where required by legislation and/or board policy. Supervisors will receive an email notification for all Safe Schools’ incidents.
Other:
- Use of Physical Restraint form: This form is to be completed by staff when a staff member exercises an unplanned physical intervention towards a student. This form is not to be completed if physical intervention was used for a student, as per their safety plan. Principals will receive an email notification for this form and are required to review and take any necessary corrective actions.
- Always encourage workers to utilize the incident reporting platform for reporting all workplace incidents. The Supervisor should never discourage a worker from filing a report.
- If you need to update information related to a report that has been previously submitted, then please use the “Incident Report Update” feature or email Abilities directly at: abilities.office@peelsb.com
