By-Election Nominations for President

Please find the timeline for the President By-Election below. The President position will commence February 7, 2022 until December 2022 when new Executive elections will take place for all positions.

  • Nominations for President will be accepted from January 6 at 6:00 am until January 9 at 6:00 pm. Please send completed nomination forms to Cheryl Wing at cwing@opseu.org.

  • Candidates will be announced on January 10 and are welcome to submit speeches to OPSEU Staff Representative Cheryl Wing via email at cwing@opseu.org no later than January 11, 2 at 6:00 pm if you wish to have this posted on our website on January 12.
  • Voting will open online using Simply Voting beginning January 17 at 6:00 am and close January 18 at 6:00 pm. The winning candidate will be announced the same evening to the membership.

Please note the following important information if you are considering running for any Executive Position.

  1. In order to run for any Local Executive Committee Officer position (President, Vice President, Second Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Chief Steward), you must first be a Steward. Please click here for a list of current Stewards.
  2. You must be a member in good standing in order to hold any elected position.

OPSEU President Duties (Article 29.5.1)

The President shall enforce compliance with Bylaws and regulations of the Union and Local; preside at Local meetings; be an ex-officio member of all Local committees; generally supervise the affairs and operations of the Local; carry out such other duties as may be prescribed by Local Bylaws.

Shared & Additional Duties

  • Oversee healthy functioning of the LEC and the Local
  • Keep the union visible and credible with employer(s) and in the workplace(s)
  • Represent the Local to the rest of OPSEU/SEFPO, the Labour movement and the community
  • Share leadership role with other LEC members
  • Encourage and mentor new and diverse leadership in all parts of the local
  • Work with the Treasurer to maintain financial health of the Local
  • Maintain and encourage communication between Stewards, Committees, Units, Regional Office and Executive Board Members
  • Attend and report on Board of Trustee Meeting
  • Represent members at Children’s Aid Society and Peel Board Investigations
  • Represent members at mediation meetings
  • Represent member at evaluation meetings
  • Represent members at grievance meetings
  • Facilitate return to work planning
  • Member support- telephone and email inquiries
  • Uphold the Collective Agreement
