Modules 1-4 have been rewritten and are currently being piloted on the October 5 PD day. Once modules have been reviewed, they will be updated and posted in early 2019 for members to start retaking.

Information for those interested in facilitating a module will be posted at a later date.

MODULE V: BACK CARE AND LIFTING

This workshop is offered with the assistance of Community Rehab and invited distributors of mechanical lifts and other assistive devices. Community Rehab staff will provide instruction and training in safe lifting and transfer techniques for both students and the Educational Resource Facilitator. Participants will have a “hands on” opportunity to practice a variety of techniques, including the use of mechanical lifts.

MODULE VI: HEALTH AND SAFETY

This module, developed by the Environmental Health and Safety Office of the Peel District School Board, looks at the Occupational Health and Safety Act and considers employee and employer obligations under the act including work refusals, accident/incident reporting and communicable diseases. Note: Must be attended every 3 years. MODULE VII: DE-ESCALATION AND PERSONAL SAFETY TRAINING (FORMERLY PPI INTRODUCTORY LEVEL 1)

1. Verbal De-escalation

  • Recognizing precipitating factors that may cause students to become anxious or act out
  • Verbal Escalation Continuum and appropriate interventions
  • Crisis Development Behaviour Model and recommended staff attitude/approaches
  • Personal Space, Non-verbal Communication, Supportive Stance

2. Personal Safety and Debriefing

  • Non-verbal techniques to avoid injury (demonstration and practise)
  • COPING model for debriefing
  • Written test

*Upon successful completion of the 6 hour training and written test, members receive a certification card from the Crisis Prevention Institute with a 2 year expiration date. Before the expiration date, you are expected to attend a half-day Module VII course (referred to as a ‘re-cert’) to maintain certification. Upon successful completion, another card will be isued with a new certification date. If you are unable to retrain within the 24 month window, you will be required to enrol in the full day training to be certified by CPI and Peel Board.
