Central Bargaining Update: Bulletin #1

Central Bargaining Update: Bulletin #1

Yesterday on Tuesday June 23 your OPSEU/SEFPO Bargaining Team met with government (Crown) and employer representatives (Council of Employer’s Associations) in Toronto for the first time during this round of central negotiations.

Note: The Council of Employers’ Associations (CEA) represents all school board employers across Ontario. The Ministry of Education represents the provincial government at the table, which is also referred to in formal proceedings as the “Crown”.

OPSEU/SEFPO served notice to bargain on June 3 along with OSBCU, ETFO, OSSTF, OECTA, EWAO, and AEFO. In accordance with the School Board Collective Bargaining Act, the government had 15 days to schedule the first bargaining date. We received confirmation of our first day within this time frame.

As a first step in the central bargaining process, the parties reached an agreement yesterday on the ground rules for this round of negotiations.

Next Steps

We return to the bargaining table on July 7 to begin discussions on scope – what matters will be centrally negotiated and what matters will be local provisions. Two additional bargaining dates have been scheduled for end of July.

Your Bargaining Team remains committed to providing regular updates throughout the bargaining process.

Collective Action

Thank you to those who wore RED to show solidarity – we will be asking you to do so again on July 7 when we return to the table!

For those who are especially keen to get to work engaging our members, we are currently inviting applications for mobilizers. Please see here for details.

Stay tuned for future solidarity actions to support our collective fight for a fair contract that defends the integrity of public education in Ontario.
